Due to my special business relationship I have with Unibroue, I was able to taste both Ale Gâteau Forêt Noire (USA version) and 25e Anniversaire (Canada version) before both hit the market.

To celebrate Unibroue’s twenty-fifth anniversary, they created a unique sumptuous ale and renewed with their tradition of brewing Unibroue anniversary beers. Master Brewer Jerry Vietz unleashed his creativity to dream up this special brew, with this idea in mind: “you can’t have an anniversary without a cake”.

This anniversary brew offers roasted malt aromas, dark chocolate flavors and delicate fruity accents that lead to a slightly tart finish. Their liquid “Black Forest Cake” is bound to offer a tasting experience made up of pure delight. Let’s toast to this celebration.

Ale brewed with spices, tart cherry juice and with natural flavor added.

STYLE: Unibroue-style specialty dark ale. 10.5% ABV.

APPEARANCE: Very dark brown (almost black) liquid color with reddish tones. Head color is light tan, cotton-ball like density. There is thick lacing on the sides of the glass during consumption.

AROMA: Bready Unibroue yeast, cocoa, cherry cordial / black cherry stone, black cherry tea.

FLAVOR: Black Forest cake, cocoa nibs, dark fruits, cherry juice, raspberries, chocolate malt.

MOUTHFEEL: The signature blend of Unibroue creaminess with moderate effervescence found in their dark ales. Coats the entire mouth with its richness, but also awakens the soft palate with the refined tartness from the cherry juice. Both linger for a while, inviting you to take that next delicious sip.

IMPRESSION: C’mon! Who doesn’t love cherries and chocolate?

Both versions tasted identical. They are sweet, fruity ales that can go with a wide variety of rich dishes. I highly recommend picking up the VERY BEST Black Forest cake you can find and pair it with this beer.

The aging potential (the website says 5 years) we believe it to be up to 10. Within that amount of time, the fruit flavors would round out, and create a heavenly liquid. Get either eversion while you can!

Santé mes amis!
